the bra bridge

whenever we return from a weekend out of town, i feel a brief gearshift, a millisecond of transition that tells me "we're home". usually it's an intangible thing, a sense of a change in the atmosphere around me. but yesterday, coming home after a few days of glittering mississippi sunshine and pomegranate mint juleps, it was more than just a feeling. the bridge across the kansas river was strung with brassieres from end to end, as it is every october for "bras across the kaw". just like the city itself, there are bras of every shape and size and personality. big bras. little bras. painted bras, smiley face bras, studded bras, memorial bras, beaded bras, glittery bras, doodled bras, corset bras, modest bras, lacy bras, racy bras, feathered bras, just about any kind of bra you can imagine. (for those in town, they're still accepting donations, as some fool filched a string of them last year before the display came down.) it's a far more personal and persuasive effort, i think, than a traditional display of pink ribbons. a reminder that a lot of people and a lot of boobs lived in these. a reminder to be proactive about my health. perhaps most of all, a reminder that i was clearly back in lawrence.

see you tomorrow for list it tuesday!

Hi Aimee,
This post is great! At first I wondered why you're showing us all your bras Lol
Then I read on and thought "what a wonderful way to get the message out there and raise funds"
Well done and thanks for sharing.

Oh my! I love what you have to say about this.

And good for you for actually walking over the bridge and taking pictures. I haven't done that. But every time I drive over the bridge I think how cool it is, and hope I (or anyone else) doesn't get into a wreck looking at them all.

Aimee, i LOVE this way of showing support for Breast Cancer. Yes, it's way more personal than those pink ribbons....way more! Get your mammograms Ladies!

Is this the bridge near the Outlet Mall? That was built during the time I lived in Lawrence. I worked at the mall one summer and loved walked across the bridge during my lunch break. I even saw bald eagles one day. Yeah Lawrence!

Wonderful post, Great message...I just entered a bra painted on a pillow for Bras for a Cause here in Iowa. You should go check it out.
I titled it Fluff you Pillow Once a Month, Self examination.
Thanks for sharing you bridge of bras. Many Blessings, Deborah

What a fabulous reminder and wonderful display! I love it and I thank you for sharing it with us. Wouldn't it be great if every city and town, large and small did something similar?

See you later today!

That's a great idea. Do you have the 'moon walk' in America? Here they do a night time walk where women wear their bras all decorated like this over their tops and walk to raise money for breast cancer research.

Looking forward to list it Tuesday - I've got my blog post written and all ready to post as soon as yours is up (allowing for the time difference between you and Ireland!)

Bras are such odd things when seen like this, out of usual context and out in public... and what a curious welcome home... I love that feeling too.

What a funny and touching way to bring awareness. So very Lawrence.

I heard you say this on facebook but I SO didn't really actually picture real bras on a bridge (although that's what you said) SO funny! I love it. So much cooler than pink ribbons :)

that bridge o'bras is awesome!!!
breast cancer awareness and finding a cure is very important to me and it is so wonderful to see how creative and inspired people can be for something so worthy. It makes me want to have my own banner of bras or perhaps a streamer of strung together 'lift and seperaters' of my very own, of course decorated with glitter, feathers and bejeweled!!!
