surprise balls! how did i make it through childhood without ever making or opening one? injustice! well, i know about them now. my kids each bought one at a craft fair last year and they were absolutely enthralled by them. i remember that we, the parents, weren't quite as enthralled as the unwrapping went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on, as the piles of crepe paper surged and the doodads emerged, but in the end their giddiness trumped our annoyance. when i saw amanda's darling post and tutorial on surprise balls at kind over matter, i decided to make them as favors for my daughter's birthday party this weekend and risk the outrage of the partygoers' parents. inside went the normal random crap of goodie bags: ring pops, mini bubbles, googly eyes, stickers, carnival tickets, etc. i also had a few bags of crinkly colored paper strips (the stuff that's like mulch for presents) which i planned to layer in with the doodads, but in the end i didn't have the heart to do it. as it is, there probably won't be many parents speaking to me after this weekend anyway ;)

Not seen anything like this in the U.K. They look really exciting to open, and the silky ribbon makes a lovely contrast to the paper (-:
wow! once again, a fabulous idea!
I got one from Selfridges in Birmingham in the UK for an adult girlfriend. It was quite fun at the dinner party we were at but it did go on and on... the gifts were more suited for children though (didn't tell you that on the packet) and I was a bit embarrased. She gave me all the crepe paper back at the end saying I could use it for my 'crafting', lol.
i feel a confusing combination of total inspiration and utter failure whenever i see your kid-centric crafts. the only colored balls at our house are usually flying past my face. how how how do you fit it all in?
that is such a fun idea!! i have never seen them before!! i would love to open one of them!
I'd be delighted if Gracie got something lika that instead of the "dollar store pseuo-educational" crap that some parents have started giving out. She has 15 decks of alphabet cards and 400000 decks of dollar store Go Fish. At least she can eat the candy and blow the bubbles and glue the googly eyes on something (maybe one of the plants, a la Christoper Walken?) FUN!
I've never seen these before you mentioned them either. I love the idea and wouldn't at all mind my kids bringing them home. And I ditto Liv's sentiment about feeling both inspired and ashamed whenever you post such kidcentric fabulousity.
i feel so gypped! we didn't have them growing up, either. let's make a grown-up version!!!
I was JUST reading about these too...they aren't anything I had ever seen during my childhood either. What a GREAT idea for a party favor! I love all of the colored tissue paper...beautiful!
Great idea!
Oh my gosh! These are seriously fabulous!!! I never received one either... but I'm thinking I'm going to have to make some of these - for kids and kids at heart ;)
Wheeee! Just looking at them makes me happy!!!

i am all googley-eyed over your balls! i never had one as a kid, either. another thing for the deprivation list!
I think they are lovely! Anyway, what is a little bit of parental annoyance when kids are having FUN?
You are the coolest Mom, ever! I totally missed out on party balls as a kid... Hmmm, maybe this could be a wedding idea? An ode to inner child!
I love your creative process.
XO!
These are sooooo wonderful!!!! Made a few for friends for their birthday, and they were a huge hit! What fun!!!
WHAT an amazing idea!! Did you let your kids help you make them? I'd be tempted to do them on my own so my own kids could get one too and also be surprised.
Hmmmmmmm..... (stroking imaginary beard) I think I should throw a just-because party and make some of these!!
Amiee, I always get such a great chuckle out of your posts! LOL! These photos were so colorfully delish to my jaded eyes this morning! I say it's worth the rath of the parents - totally cute and fun! Hugs, Jessi xox
Oh my goodness, what a fabulous idea! I think they look pretty just as they are. A large glass vase full of surprise balls. Wheeeeee!
Hope your little one had a GREAT birthday party!
