Glue it Tuesday 12/17 + kaleidoscope shimmer candles

As promised, here is the final installment of Glue it Tuesday! I tackled the first of many kaleidoscope shimmer candles for teacher gifts this year. Very easy & fun.

You'll need:
IKEA Tindra Candles (yummy scents & only $1.99 each)
A package of tissue paper in assorted colors
Scissors
Mod Podge
Glamour Dust or pearlizing medium (you can also use Mod Podge with glitter)
A small plastic plate or tray for mixing the Mod Podge concoction
Foam brush
Magazine pages to protect your work surface

What to do:
1) Pick your color combinations. My favorite palettes are:

orange + red + pink + yellow (or any combo within that palette)
blue + green
green + yellow
blue + pink + purple
pink + purple
blue + purple
and so on...

Color combos that don't go so well together: red/green, orange/blue, purple/yellow and so on. Tissue paper is very thin, so you want to stick with colors that won't look like mud when the pieces are layered. I also recommend coordinating the candle color with your tissue paper palette (or choosing white which will go with everything).

2) Cut the sheets of tissue paper into 1"-2" squares, rectangles, rhomboids, trapezoids, isosceles triangles, or whatever geometric shapes feed your needs.

3) Put some Mod Podge on the plastic tray and mix it with a small amount of glamour dust or pearlizing medium. In the past I've used the Glimmer Dust for Kaleidoscope candles, but it flies everywhere, and so I switched to the pearlizing medium, which makes much less of a mess. You can skip this step if you don't want the shimmery finish -- it looks just as good without it.

4) Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge on the surface of the glass candle, add a tissue paper shape to the surface, then brush another layer of Mod Podge on top of it, smoothing out wrinkles and bubbles as you go along. Repeat all the way around the outside of the candle until you have 2-3 layers of tissue paper covering the surface. If you overlap the shapes slightly, it will give the candle a pretty stained glass & kaleidoscope type look.

For best results, let the Mod Podge dry a bit in between layers, as tissue paper is very thin and rips easily when wet. Once the candle is dry, and especially when it is lit, this little candle will blaze with color and sparkle. The more the candle burns down, the more brightly the color will shine. If you don't live near an IKEA, obviously you can use any glass candle for this project. I love Novena candles, the tall glass altar candles -- which are often available at Target or Wal-Mart (and sometimes even in grocery stores) for about $2-$3 each.

If you stuck it out (ha!) to the end with me here for Glue it Tuesday, thanks! And since we'll never stop gluing, we'll still see each others' crafty projects on our blogs and elsewhere, so it really isn't goodbye.

she climbs high and hugs the sky

Today, Natasha from Creative Nachos unveiled her project Art From Around the Globe, in which she had twelve of her students (first and third graders) create self portraits in the form of visual poetry, comparing themselves to different animals. Natasha then sent the children's pieces to artists around the world, who used them as idea springboards for their own works. My art partner was Campbell, who is a climber; a hugger; a fearless artist; a lover of green, peace, and hearts. She reminds me much of my older daughter Nina, who lives perpetually in the treetops and finds peace in creating and dreaming. My drawing is dedicated to both of them. The goal of Natasha's project was for these children to understand the impact that their words and art can have on others. You can see all of the pairings here. The power of these children is quite something and I thank Natasha for reminding us how one person can open a new world to the rest of us.

Glue it Tuesday: 12/10 and an important GIT newsflash

In the spirit of changing things up as I like to do here, just wanted to let you all know that I am going to wind down Glue it Tuesday. Since the year is coming to a close, it seems like a natural time to do it. It has been a fun run, but as you've noticed, I've had a hard time getting my posts running on time. I'm a lousy hostess when it comes to predictability and punctuality (every ounce of that in me goes to managing my kids' schedules and getting my orders out the door on time.) This blog is like my playground; I'm much better about posting spontaneously & at my own whims here. I will continue to glue with fervor but it might be on a Sunday. Or Friday. The contrarian in me rules this space, it seems.

As the holidays are chomping down quickly on us, we'll make the last post for Glue it Tuesday next week, 12/17. Above are the Kaleidoscope Candles I made a few years ago from tissue paper and novena candles, and I've decided I am going to do the same thing for teacher gifts, but this time I'm going to pull an IKEA hack and use the Tindra candles -- they are short, cute, smell fantastic and only cost $2 each! If all goes according to plan, that is what I will post next week!

See you next Tuesday for the close, I hope -- and THANK YOU for joining in my gluey club this year.  It's been fun!

The Artsyville Holiday Shop: Day 5! {a useful though rather unimaginative ending}

It's the last day of the Artsyville Holiday Shop! To that end, I'm dishing out a useful (if rather unimaginative) way to cap off this crazy week. If you missed any of the daily sales or didn't see one that really got you going, just enter the code TAKE25 at checkout (either on Etsy or in Artsyville) and you'll save 25% on your entire order from Friday, December 6 through Monday, December 9. This way you can take your pick and take your time! I may have to do another one of those Double Washi Days sometime soon. That was one festive tape party -- more people showed up than I ever expected and I am still (very, very happily) working through the late night order packing hangovers! Have a great day and THANK YOU!

The Artsyville Holiday Shop: Day 3! + A LimeTreeFruits 2014 Planner Giveaway!

Day 3 of the Artsyville Holiday Shop brings us to Double Washi Wednesday! Yep -- order any Artsyville washi tape (singles or multipacks, doesn't matter) and I will double your washi order for free. Twice the washi fun for the same price. Whee whee washi! Today only. Available both through the Artsyville store & on Etsy.

With that out of the way I am so excited to present my stop on the LimeTreeFruits blog hop today! Raine is a watercolor artist and illustrator who is famous for her Filofax planners and printables as well as for just up & moving to a beach in the Caribbean. Her 2014 (beautiful!!) downloadable planner is here and I am lucky enough to give one away. {Side note: If you are a printable fanatic, get thee to LimeTree Fruits stat, and prepare to stay a long, long time. Not only is Raine a colorful and entertaining hostess, she has some of the most gorgeous watercolor Filofax printables I've ever seen -- many of them free!}

Here are some teaser peeks into the planner, and believe me, this is just the beginning! This baby will have a thunk factor when you print them all out. Each page is super juicy and full of color -- even the most disorganized person would be motivated to get their act together & keep moving through these pages each month because they are so cheerful.

To find out more, or to go ahead and purchase one, Raine is also hosting a Pre-Order Party -- get all the details about it at LimeTreeFruits Planners.

To enter my drawing, just leave a comment here! Thanks and have a great Wednesday!

**UPDATE -- I'll do the drawing on December 11! Thanks everyone for all the lovely comments so far... great to meet you all!! xoxo Aimee***

The Artsyville Holiday Shop: Day 1!

After three days of a production frenzy & letting dirty dishes pile up in the kitchen sink, the Artsyville holiday shop is open! I'm kicking off Day 1 of the mayhem with a Magnet Monday Sale -- all jumbo magnets are $4 today only (regularly $6) both at artsyville.etsy.com and www.artsyville.com. Each day through Friday I'll have a special doodle deal in the shop, so make sure to come back!

I've also stocked the shelves with brand new Goodie Gift packs -- new versions of my goodie boxes, totally ready to go so you don't have to do a thing! They are sweet little packages stuffed with a magnet, a groovy doodle notebook, a roll of Artsyville washi tape, and a confetti-filled bundle of chocolates and tea (except for the Coffee pack; that didn't seem to make much sense to put tea in there, so I've put a packet of Starbucks Via coffee in that.) They are wrapped quite festively in a bright chevron paper & ready to go with a To/From gift tag and coordinating gift note that I'm happy to leave blank (if it is coming to you first) or to fill in (if it is going directly to your recipient). If you don't see the theme there that you want, just send me a note at aimee (at) artsyville.com, because I can make a custom goodie gift pack from any magnet (and pretty much any goods in the shop!)

Time to clean the kitchen. Back tomorrow! Have a great week!
